Top Ten Reasons Church Plants Fail

Summarized by Ben Arment from an article written by Jim Griffith and Don Nations:

Lack of a clear definition of “success”
Prematurely launching public worship
Mismatch between the planter and the community
Someone didn’t accurately assess the planter
Lack of ongoing training and coaching
Putting too much stock in one big event or campaign
Taking on too much overhead too soon [eg: office space]
The inability or unwillingness to recruit new people
Inability to prioritize the right activities and investments
Unwillingness to change the strategy when it doesn’t work

The irony that I see in this concise summary listing reasons for failure is the lack of willingness to change. Change is even difficult among younger church leaders as well as older leaders. Change is difficult when it applies to strategy or personnel because we as church leaders may be heavily invested in those decisions. Change may involve the method of coaching and training. It may be leaving your current location which you cannot maintain and moving to a less expensive alternative. Change may mean changing priorities and investments to reach the community. Change may mean changing ourselves.
